The Decision

“A day after thousands of people in Washington, D.C., protested the seventh anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, a few hundred people rallied Sunday near Westlake Center in Seattle before marching for an hour through downtown streets. Their complaints were not exclusive to the war in Iraq. Many said conflicts in the Middle East have kept the United States from focusing sufficient resources on jobs, housing, education and health care … Dressed in superhero tights and cape, protester Saab Lofton said he decided, despite family pressure, not to join the military after graduating from high school in 1987. He made the decision while watching the movie Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and has been part of the peace movement since. The superhero outfit began as a promotion for a book he wrote, now out of print, and now serves as a symbol of his activism.”
